Life cycle thinking (LCT) takes a holistic view of the production and consumption of a product or service and assesses its impacts on the environment throughout the entire life cycle. At each life cycle stage, there is resource and energy consumption as well as pollution to the natural environment that creates impacts from cradle to grave.
The benefit of using an LCT approach means that negative impacts are minimized while avoiding the transfer of these impacts from one life cycle stage to another. When applied to product design, production processes and a decision-making aid, LCT is a beneficial strategy for crafting and implementing successful sustainability strategies.
The LCT concept is based on the Life Cycle Management approach.
Life Cycle Management (LCM) is an integrated approach to measure and minimize the impacts on the environment, the economy and society of a product, process or service during its entire life cycle.
LCM uses a toolbox made up of different approaches and methods, including:
There are many advantages for companies that choose to use LCM, which significantly reduces overall production costs by decreasing both the energy requirements and use of raw materials. This reduction then has a positive impact on the environment, as the company releases fewer harmful emissions. LCM also enhances the company’s image to consumers, the public, and governments.
Among the proposed tools offered by LCM, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) represents one of the most thorough and reliable methods.
LCA has become an important tool for the environmental impact assessment of products and materials and businesses are increasingly relying on this method for decision-making.
Quantis was founded in 2009 when spin-offs from two of the world’s leading engineering schools decided to merge.
The Quantis joint venture was between Ecointesys - Life Cycle Systems, a spin-off from the Swiss engineering school École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) created in 2005, and the consulting team of the Canadian Inter-university Research Center for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services (CIRAIG), located at the École Polytechnique of Montréal, Canada.

CEO, Quantis International
As CEO, Emmanuelle leads Quantis by example with a high level of commitment to our clients, our team, and our strategic vision for growth. Emmanuelle has over 13 years of experience in environmental issues ranging from Life Cycle Thinking and LCA to environmental risk assessment and biodiversity. She also specializes in development and implementation of sustainability strategies, Life Cycle Management, change management as well as C-Level training and coaching.
Emmanuelle joined Quantis France in 2012 from Veolia Environment, where she was the group’s Environmental Footprint Advisor in its Sustainability Department following her time as the manager of the Environment Risks & Impacts R&D team.
Emmanuelle holds a MsC in Chemistry and studied in France, Australia and Chile.
Managing Director, US
Jon’s primary focus is on developing innovative solutions, ensuring exceptional service and creating value for businesses and organizations that work with the US branch.
Jon has over 10 years of experience in sustainability, LCA, impact assessment, sustainability strategy and the communication. He has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Health Science from the University of Michigan.

Managing Director, Lausanne
Arnaud has over 15 years of experience in the field of sustainability and was promoted to Managing Director of the Lausanne branch in early 2015. In addition to be being a pillar in the development of the Lausanne branch since he joined Quantis in 2011, Arnaud brings valuable LCA experience to the group, notably in bioenergy, database, inventory and innovative technology development. He also coordinates H2020 EU research projects as well as those in the fields of cement and biorefineries.
Arnaud Dauriat holds a M.Eng. of Environmental and Earth Resources Engineering, from Imperial College, London, UK and a diploma of Postgraduate Studies in Energy from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Arnaud has also served in various roles at the EPFL, including senior scientist, and was the co-founder of a biofuels and LCA consultancy in Lausanne, which he managed for 7 years.

Managing Director, Zürich
Rainer has more than 20 years experience in the environmental field and has solid expertise in environmental research, sustainability, LCA, LCI databases, energy, mobility and policy support. More specifically, Rainer is an expert in LCA of renewable energy in the transport sector and on sustainable development of developing and transitional regions (managed research partnerships with India, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania).
During his impressive career, Rainer worked 12 years as a scientist and leader of the LCA group at Empa (the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science & Technology) where he also hosted the Ecoinvent center and was member of the Board of Directors of Ecoinvent.
Rainer holds a M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences and a Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ, Switzerland).

Managing Director, France
Dimitri has instilled a client-centric approach to the products and services developed and delivered by Quantis France and is particularly focused on how life cycle assessment and sustainability can be relevant to today's organizations. First as an analyst and then as Director of Business Development, he has managed the environmental labeling projects in France and has also developed strong expertise in the agro-food, renewable energy, eco-innovation and sustainable communication areas.
Dimitri joined Quantis in 2009 after receiving a Master's Degree in environmental science from the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. He also holds a Master's Degree in general engineering from the ECAM university in Rennes, France.
Dimitri is an avid sailor and is the co-author of the book "100 pionniers pour la planète" (100 Pioneers for the Planet), published by J.C. Lattès in 2009.

Managing Director, Germany
Michael Spielmann is leading Quantis’ development in Germany to respond to the market need for innovative and adapted sustainability services and solutions. With over 15 years of experience in environmental consulting, Michael is a respected member of the sustainability community, known both for his technical expertise as well as for his ability to apply the science to business, with a special focus on product and value chain sustainability.
Michael holds a PhD from ETH Zürich and was a founding member of the ecoinvent LCA database. He joined Quantis in September 2014 after 7 years at thinkstep (previously PE International) as a principal consultant and business developer.
